Why Should I Marry?

Genesis 2:18-25.
Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Marriage was ordained by God at creation, and it was God Himself who brought the first woman to the first man.  Therefore, marriage is a normal, honourable and holy state before God.  For this reason, it must be entered into with serious consideration, remembering the chief reasons why God ordained marriage.
Marriage is fitting, proper and profitable to you. Did God, not Himself say, "It is not good that the man should be alone"? Did God, not then proceed to make him a helper fit for him? Living by yourself is leaving yourself in a state that is not proper, fitting or profitable! Let us consider this passage:
1.      It was ordained, firstly, for the companionship, help and comfort which a husband and wife need from each other – for we read that God made “a helper fit for” the man.
2.      It was ordained, secondly, for the continuation and multiplication of the human race – for God blessed the first couple and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth”.
3.      It was ordained, thirdly, to enable the natural affection and desire between a man and a woman to have a holy fulfilment – for the Bible says, “Because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband”. (1Cor. 7:2)

4.      It was ordained, fourthly, for the welfare of human society, which can only be strong and happy where marriage is held in honour – for the family is the basic unit of society and God says that it is in the family that children are to be brought up “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord”. (Eph._6:4)

This has implication for you who is still not married because of flimsy reasons. You are putting yourself at an unnecessary disadvantage. But even worse you are putting another person, who should be your spouse at the same disadvantage! But even worse, you are putting the human race at a disadvantage. In that state, you are opening yourself to lust, and you may not be willing to admit this but the truth is that you burn with passion in your privacy, don't you?

This also has an implication for the so called 'same sex marriage' or gay marriage. This is a great misnomer - this does not exist - Yes! there is no such thing as same sex marriage - it is impossible. Marriage is only defined in the context of a man and a woman, living together by mutual consent, enjoying sex together and propagating the human race. Where there is a living together, sharing bed between two men or two women, this is called homosexuality, is immorality just like prostitution! It is never called marriage by God, so we may call it marriage but God who instituted marriage is not amused. in effect it is sin against God. This terrible arrangement is a potential threat to the existence of human race. It is worse than genocide and it should be called what it is - atrocity and crime against humanity!

Finally it has implication in the manner in which the married are to relate with one another. Once you married, God expect you to live in perfect fidelity to your spouse, because God gave her or him to you for your own good, and for His glory. The husband is to love the wife, sincerely, genuinely, reasonably, and give himself to her just like Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her, to present her without spot, blemish or wrinkle to Himself. The wife on the other hand is to submit to her husband just as the church submits to Christ. This means obedience in all things, honor and respect at all times.

  1. The Bible actually favours singleness......the married have many troubles. We singles can only pray that the Lord will bless us with a spouse, in His Time...we cannot do anything else...and we are not especially open to lust, married people also lust....and the Lord is faithful to protect and help us. In the Bible the Lord is more concerned about the state of our hearts, than if we married or not. I disagree....single people are not second class citizens..... No one completes us, God made us complete.
